Power BI
Power BI reports on your screens
impressBox shows Power BI reports on digital signage screens: you connect Power BI once with a Microsoft sign-in, paste a report link to the AI agent, and the report plays live on modern screens, or as images, video or through an external player on older ones. No Power BI Embedded or Fabric capacity is needed.
- Power BI licence for the connected user; no Embedded or Fabric capacity

How Power BI gets onto a screen
- 1
Connect Power BI once
Sign in with Microsoft for your impressBox account. This is Power BI “embed for your organization” (user owns data): it works with a Power BI Pro licence and needs no Power BI Embedded or Fabric capacity.
- 2
Paste a report link
Give the AI agent the link from app.powerbi.com. It reads the report, the workspace (or My workspace) and the page from the URL, so you never look up an ID.
- 3
Live or screenshot
Screens with a modern browser engine show the live report. In the demo, the assistant already asks whether you want the live report or a screenshot.
- 4
Add it to a playlist
The report becomes a content item like any other: put it in a playlist, give it a duration, schedule it and publish it. A live report loads fresh data each time it plays.
Live report, images or video
A live report runs Microsoft’s own report viewer in the screen’s browser engine and shows it as it looks in Power BI. That viewer is built with modern JavaScript (ES2022), so the screen needs Chromium 94 or newer; older engines cannot be fixed with polyfills, because the code runs inside Microsoft’s own frame. Screens that cannot run it still show your reports in one of three ways.
Server-rendered images
impressBox opens the report in a browser (headless Chrome) on its own servers, waits until every visual has drawn, and sends the result to the screen as an image.
- Refresh
- Often, e.g. every 5 to 15 minutes
- Works on
- Every screen that shows pictures: LG webOS 3 to 6, Samsung Tizen 2.4 and newer, Orsay, Android, BrightSign
Server-rendered video clips
One or several report pages rendered into a short MP4 clip, encoded within each screen’s codec limits (for example H.264 Level 4.1 on Samsung).
- Refresh
- About once an hour or a few times a day
- Works on
- Every screen that plays video; good when several pages should play as one clip
External impressBox player
Connect an impressBox player (Raspberry Pi 4/5 or an x86 mini PC, Chromium 122 to 124) to the screen’s HDMI input, and the screen shows the live report like a new screen does.
- Refresh
- Live report, loaded again each time it plays
- Works on
- Any screen with an HDMI input
Planned: the impressBox assistant will pick the live report or images automatically for each screen. In the demo it already asks whether you want the live report or a screenshot.
Security
What impressBox can access, where tokens live, and how to cut access off.
Microsoft sign-in, read-only access
You connect with a Microsoft Entra sign-in of your own Power BI user. impressBox asks only for delegated, read-only permissions (Report.Read.All, Dataset.Read.All, Workspace.Read.All, plus offline_access, openid and profile) and never sees the password.
Refresh token encrypted at rest
The Microsoft refresh token is stored encrypted (Fernet, AES) on impressBox servers in the EU. The app’s client secret lives only in the server environment, never in templates, on screens or in the browser.
Screens get short-lived tokens
A screen never gets the refresh token. It proves its identity with the device ID and PIN issued by impressBox and receives an access token that lasts about an hour, renewed automatically before it expires.
Only your own account
A screen can only get a token for the Power BI connection of its own impressBox account. Requests are rate-limited, and a refused request does not reveal whether a connection exists. Tokens and PINs are never written to logs.
Power BI permissions apply
Screens see what the connected Microsoft user can open. Row-level security and sensitivity rules are enforced by Power BI for that identity. We recommend a dedicated “screens” Power BI Pro account with access only to the reports meant for screens.
Easy to revoke
Disconnect Power BI in impressBox, or revoke the app’s consent or sign-in sessions in Microsoft Entra. Screens then stop receiving new tokens within the token lifetime (one hour at most).
Data stays in Power BI
Report data stays in Microsoft Power BI and is drawn on the screen; impressBox stores no dataset data. In screenshot mode the rendered picture is stored in impressBox media storage like any other image.
Rendering on our own servers
Server-side rendering runs in headless Chrome on impressBox’s own servers, not on third-party render services. The render link is signed for exactly one content item and expires after 24 hours.
How impressBox handles security across the platform is on the security page.
Power BI screen compatibility
Live Power BI needs a Chromium 94 or newer browser engine. Checked in October 2026 on real screens; the device information in impressBox shows the platform, OS version and firmware of every screen.

Android displays, players and TV devices
On Android, the screen needs Android System WebView 94 or newer. Whether it gets there depends on how the WebView is updated:
- With Google Play (Android TV, Google TV, Google EDLA certified panels): WebView updates from Google Play, so Android 7 and newer keeps getting version 94 or newer.
- AOSP displays without Google Play (most professional signage): the WebView is the one in the firmware. Android 13 and newer ships WebView 101 or newer, which is enough; Android 7 to 12 needs vendor firmware with a newer WebView.
- Amazon Fire TV uses Amazon’s own WebView, so it depends on Amazon’s firmware; Fire TV sticks with Vega OS cannot run Android apps at all.
To check a unit, look at the WebView version in the device information in impressBox, or run adb shell dumpsys webviewupdate.

Example prompts
“Put this Power BI sales report on the office screens.”
Reads the report, workspace and page from the link, creates the content item and adds it to the office playlist. If Power BI is not connected yet, it first replies with the Microsoft sign-in link.
“Add the second page of this report too, for 30 seconds.”
Creates another item from the link of that page, with a 30-second duration.
“Put this report on the lobby screens.”
In the demo, asks whether you want the live report or a screenshot before it creates the item.
Power BI on screens: questions
Do I need Power BI Embedded or Fabric capacity?
No. impressBox uses Power BI “embed for your organization” (user owns data): the report is shown with the identity of the Microsoft user you connect, so that user needs a Power BI Pro licence, and the report does not need Power BI Embedded (A SKU) or Fabric capacity.
Which screens can show a live Power BI report?
Screens with a Chromium 94 or newer browser engine: LG webOS 6.0 with LTS firmware 04.x, webOS 6.1, 8.0 and 9.0; Samsung Tizen 7.0 and newer; BrightSign OS 9.1 and newer; Android devices with WebView 94 or newer; the impressBox player; and Chrome, Edge or ChromeOS. See the compatibility table for the series.
What about older screens?
They can still show your reports: as server-rendered images (pilot), as server-rendered video clips (on request), or live through an external impressBox player on the HDMI input (available now). On LG webOS 6.0, a firmware update to 04.x makes the screen compatible; Samsung firmware updates do not raise the Tizen version.
How often does the report refresh on screen?
A live report is loaded when the item starts playing and shows the data as of that moment; it does not reload by itself while it is on screen. It loads again each time it plays: every playlist cycle, or after its duration (for example 15 minutes) when it is the only item. The data itself is as fresh as the dataset refresh in Power BI. Server-rendered images can refresh often, for example every 5 to 15 minutes; video clips suit reports that change about once an hour or a few times a day.
Can I show several pages of a report?
Yes. The page is read from the link you paste, so add one content item per page and play them in a playlist. Several pages can also be rendered into one video clip, on request.
What happens when the screen is offline?
A live report is loaded from Microsoft Power BI, so the screen needs an internet connection to show it. Server-rendered images and video clips are downloaded to the player like other media and keep playing from its storage; see offline resilience.
Does impressBox store my Power BI data?
No dataset data is stored: the report is drawn on the screen from Power BI. The exception is screenshot mode, where the rendered picture is stored in impressBox media storage like any other image. Rendering runs on impressBox’s own servers, not on third-party services.
Which Power BI account should I connect?
Screens see everything the connected Microsoft user can open, with Power BI’s row-level security applied for that user. Connect a dedicated “screens” Power BI Pro account that has access only to the reports meant for screens.
How do I cut off access?
Disconnect Power BI in impressBox, or revoke the app’s consent or sign-in sessions in Microsoft Entra. Screens only hold access tokens that expire within an hour, so they stop showing the report within that time.
